Domestic Abuse

Thanet district Council press release

The issue of domestic abuse is being highlighted in Cliftonville through a street art mural, designed to draw attention to the problem.

The Thanet Community Safety Partnership worked with young people, survivors of domestic abuse and Street Art Studio to produce the mural at the Harold Road public toilets, which sends out a positive message that domestic abuse will not be tolerated.

Street Art Studio, who promote legal diversionary activities for young people interested in Street Art, commissioned a local artist who designed and created the eye catching mural, which has the message “There is NO excuse, for Domestic Abuse!” on it.

Studies have shown that a Street Art Mural differs from graffiti, as the art has meaning and contains a picture, rather than a tag.

Domestic Abuse Service Coordinator, Dee Neligan, said: “Domestic abuse can affect anyone, and certain areas of Thanet have high instances of reported domestic abuse. It’s hoped this mural will not only brighten up the car park, but will raise awareness of the issue and encourage victims to seek help. We also hope it helps to bring the community together to take a stand against domestic abuse and those responsible.”

Local and national phone numbers are advertised on the mural to provide the opportunity for anyone who needs advice or help to contact someone. For information, call the Kent Domestic Violence Information line on 0845 603 6813. For free advice, call the National Domestic Violence Helpline on freephone: 0808 2000 247. If you are suffering domestic abuse, call 999 in an emergency.

  1. we encounter so many victims at Saint Pauls that anything that draws attention to it (no pun intended) should be embraced all to often it is a subject that is swept under the carpet and it occurs in all walks of life

Comments, since I started writing this blog in 2007 the way the internet works has changed a lot, comments and dialogue here were once viable in an open and anonymous sense. Now if you comment here I will only allow the comment if it seems to make sense and be related to what the post is about. I link the majority of my posts to the main local Facebook groups and to my Facebook account, “Michael Child” I guess the main Ramsgate Facebook group is We Love Ramsgate. For the most part the comments and dialogue related to the posts here goes on there. As for the rest of it, well this blog handles images better than Facebook, which is why I don’t post directly to my Facebook account, although if I take a lot of photos I am so lazy that I paste them directly from my camera card to my bookshop website and put a link on this blog.
